Car Won’t Shift Out of Park (Top Causes & What To Do)

Why your car won’t shift out of Park

If your car is stuck in Park, the issue is usually related to the brake switch, shift‑lock mechanism, low battery voltage, or a mechanical problem inside the shifter assembly. Modern vehicles require several systems to work together before the shifter can move.

If you’re unsure where to begin, you can browse more troubleshooting guides on the blog or review common questions on the FAQ page.

1. Faulty brake light switch

The brake light switch tells the car that your foot is on the brake. If it fails, the shift‑lock system won’t release, and the shifter stays stuck in Park.

Symptoms:

  • Brake lights not turning on
  • Shifter stuck even when pressing the brake
  • Intermittent shifting issues

2. Shift‑lock solenoid failure

The shift‑lock solenoid physically prevents the shifter from moving until the brake pedal is pressed. If it fails, the shifter won’t unlock.

Symptoms: clicking sound when pressing the brake, or no sound at all.

3. Dead or weak battery

Low voltage can prevent the shift‑lock system from receiving enough power to release the shifter.

Symptoms: dim lights, slow cranking, or no response from electrical components.

4. Steering wheel lock engaged

If the steering wheel is turned sharply when the car is turned off, the steering lock can bind and make it difficult to shift out of Park.

Fix: Gently wiggle the steering wheel left and right while turning the key.

5. Mechanical failure inside the shifter

Broken plastic components, worn cables, or debris inside the shifter assembly can physically prevent movement.

Symptoms: loose shifter feel, grinding sensation, or no movement at all.

6. Parking pawl pressure (on a hill)

If the car was parked on a steep incline without using the parking brake, the transmission’s parking pawl can bind, making it hard to shift out of Park.

Fix: Have someone gently push the car uphill to relieve pressure, then try shifting again.

Emergency shift‑lock release

Most vehicles have a manual shift‑lock release slot near the shifter. You can insert a key or small tool to override the system temporarily. Check your owner’s manual for the exact location.

When to stop trying

Stop forcing the shifter if you notice:

  • Grinding or cracking sounds
  • Shifter feels stuck solid
  • Electrical burning smell

Forcing the shifter can cause expensive damage. If you need help or want to reach out, you can use the details on our Contact page.
